Imagined journeys / Poland / Bachelor's degree

From a scholarship to her own company

An imagined journey from a small town in Poland to a computer science degree in Korea, then a business and opportunities back home.

Fictional stories inspired by real scholarship pathways. Not student testimonials.

A subject she wanted to learn

Zofia grows up in a small Polish town. She is good at mathematics and enjoys explaining difficult problems to her classmates. On a borrowed laptop, she teaches herself enough code to build a simple program that helps her teacher organise practice exercises.

Her interest in Korean music leads her to learn some Korean. Later, she starts looking at Korean universities and computer science courses. She can picture herself in a classroom, learning how to build something more ambitious.

Then she looks at the costs. Her family has little left after everyday expenses. Tuition abroad would be difficult enough; housing and meals would still need to be paid for. She saves a university page and closes the laptop.

The information that changed her plan

While searching again, Zofia finds CollegesinKorea. She chooses undergraduate study and looks for living support. A GKS scholarship page explains the different types of support and links to the official application notice.

She learns that some scholarship pathways can include Korean-language training alongside degree study and financial support. This time, she has specific questions to investigate: is she eligible for the relevant intake, which departments participate, and what does the selection process require?

She follows the official links, checks the country and qualification rules, and compares the participating programs. On paper, she lists the documents she needs and the costs she would have to cover before funding begins. That evening, she shows her parents what she has found.

An application she worked for

Over the following months, Zofia obtains her academic records, asks a teacher for a recommendation and prepares her study plan. She writes about the program she made and the problems she wants to learn how to solve. She keeps practising Korean and prepares for the required selection stages.

She completes the competitive process and receives formal scholarship selection and admission information. She and her family read the support terms and arrival instructions together before making travel arrangements.

Life in Korea takes work. She corrects mistakes in language class, learns how to manage her budget and asks for help when she needs it. After completing the required language preparation and meeting degree-entry requirements, she attends her first computer science lecture. Afterwards, she sends her mother a photograph from outside the classroom.

What she builds back home

Zofia finishes her degree with a stronger understanding of software development and experience working in student teams. She stays in contact with friends and mentors she met in Korea. After returning to Poland, she works locally, learns what small businesses need and eventually starts her own software company.

Her first product is modest. She improves it after listening to customers, pays her first employee on time and grows the business gradually. As the company becomes established, she creates a small scholarship for students at her former school.

At the first award meeting, Zofia brings the old notebook in which she planned her application. She tells the students how she found the opportunity, what she had to prepare and how much she still had to learn. One of them asks where to start. Zofia opens the scholarship information with her.
